Mr.Shekhar Gaikwad an IAS Officer and commissioner of Sugar Maharashtra wasinvited to enlighten students about the Current trends in Sugar Industry. Hegave a small peek of sugar industries in Maharashtra & information aboutthe turnover of sugar industries in Maharashtra which amounts to approx 40000crores. He explained that people are dependent on sugar industries because moreemployment is available in the sugar factory and milk processing industries.The milk processing industries are also dependent on the sugarcane because moreamount of fodder is available to cattle from sugarcane. He told us that in thefuture more challenges in agriculture as the climate is changing day by day.Land of farmers get divided into small pieces due to family problems causes thelimitation on the use of machinery on the farms.

Forthat, he told us about vertical farming. In vertical farming, the spacerequired for the growing crop is minimized, due to that productivity getsincreased and farmers economy gets stronger. There is more amount ofagribusiness increasing day by day. Due to cold store facilities, the shelflife of agriculture produce gets increased. He told about ethanol productionfrom sugarcane which is used as biodiesel. There is a wide scope of ethanolproduce industries from sugarcane. Due to the use of ethanol in vehiclespollution get minimized. He told us about the advance farming technology. Theuse of greenhouse technology also increases the productivity of the crop. Thescope of agriculture graduates in agro-based industries is increase day by day.The vegetable processing industries also have a wide scope.
