CDE Program and Workshop on Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART)

The Department ofPublic Health Dentistry and the Department of Pedodontics and Preventivedentistry had jointly organised a workshop on “Atraumatic RestorativeTreatment” at the Dr. D.Y Patil Dental College and Hospital, Pimpri, Pune fortwo days. The Inaugural session of the workshop was held on 27th June 2019.Present on the occasion were Dr. Dibyendu Mazumder, President of the DentalCouncil of India ( DCI) and  Chief Guestof the event and  Guest of honour-Sabyasachi Saha, Secretary, Dental Council of India ( DCI), Dr. Rahul J Hegde,Member Dental Council Of India, distinguished guest Dr Prathip Phantumvanit,Dean – Faculty of Dentistry from Thammasat University, Thailand,  Dr. P D Patil, Chancellor, DPU, Dr. YashrajPatil, Trustee, DPU, Dr. Smita Jadhav, Executive Director & Trustee, DPU, Dr.  J   SBhawalkar, Dean, Medical College, Dr. N J Pawar, Vice Chancellor, DPU, Dr. D.Gopalakrishnan, Dean of the Dental College and senior dentists and otherdignitaries.

  It was Dr. Mazumdar’s maiden visit to the Dr.D Y Patil Dental College and Hospital and was he impressed by it!  He lauded the Chancellor, Dr P.D. Patil forhis exemplary vision, work ethics and industrious approach to make thisinstitute one- of -the best Medical institutes in India.  He congratulated the management for takingefforts for providing the best in academics and infrastructure which has madeit one of the finest Colleges in Dentistry in the country. He said that thestudents of DPU are very privileged to be a part of this institution and hewould in future recommend this University to students.

 Dr Prathip Phantumvanit is the founder of theAtraumatic Restorative Treatment for caries control. He said initially, hissimplistic approach wasn’t accepted by the dental community. However, withtime, on seeing the benefits of this technique through repeated trials, it hasnot only been accepted and commended but has also been inducted in the day –to-day practice. He elaborated on the benefits of the SMART technique which isactually the modification of his previous ART technique. Explaining about(Simplified Modified Atraumatic Restorative Technique or the SMART technique,he said  This appropriate technology hasbeen very successful in our region. This technology is very beneficial and Ibelieve India might adopt this technique in the near future.”  For the uninitiated, this technique isminimally invasive, cost-effective, patient-friendly and pain-free.  It can be practised without specialisedequipment and complete dental setup. This was the first workshop ever conductedin India. At the session, the MOU between the two Universities- DPU andThammasat University for the Medical College as well as the Dental College wasrenewed. In 2013, it was Dr. Prathip Phantumvanit who had initiated the MOUbetween the two Universities first.


 The workshop was successfully conducted.
