Online Faculty Development Program (e-FDP) on Pedagogy and Teaching-Learning in the current scenario of COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. D.Y. Patil Institute of Biotechnology & Bioinformatics (DYPBBI), Tathawade, Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune (DPU) has organized an online faculty development program (e-FDP) on “Pedagogy and Teaching Learning in the current scenario of COVID-19 pandemic”, during February 26 and 27, 2021. The main objective of organizing this FDP was to discuss teaching pedagogies and approaches being used by faculty members at various institutes and organizations particularly during this pandemic. It focused on the professional development of faculty members from colleges and universities across India. The program aimed to strengthen their understanding and provide insights into various pedagogical processes along with essential aspects of research at higher educational institutes. The virtual FDP was organized with an objective to understand the responsibilities and enhance the knowledge of faculty in outcome based modern Teaching-Learning processes. It also envisaged to promote inculcation of competencies and professional values in teaching fraternity, who will be able to adopt the changes in the pedagogical aspects and curriculum delivery as per the need of the time. Different sessions during the two days program provided an overview of teaching-learning principles and focused on the need to inculcate the philosophical concepts of pedagogy/andragogy at the beginning for UG/PG curriculum.

There were various talks by eminent teachers and scientists such as Dr. Alok Bhattacharya, Prof. S. Baskar, Dr. Asim M Auti, Prof. Achut Shankar and others who discussed several pedagogies and strategies to change existing methods to match the current teaching-learning landscape. As per the UGC guidelines, the Academic Team of DYPBBI conducted an online faculty development program for the teachers of HEIs including DYPBBI giving them the opportunity to discuss and showcase various teaching learning methodologies adapted at their own institutions and organizations.

DAY 1: Inauguration of the e-FDP & lectures (26th February 2021

The first day of event started with offering prayers through Saraswati Vandana, followed by felicitation of the dignitaries, a welcome address, and inaugural speech by the guests. Dr. N. J. Pawar, Honorable Vice Chancellor, Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune, Dr. Ramesh Bhonde, Research Director, Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune, Dr. Payal Bansal, Director, UCPE & FD, Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune, and Dr. J. K. Pal, Director, DYPBBI, Pune.

 The FDP session started with a talk by Dr. Asim Auti, Senior Teaching Associate, CoESME, IISER, Pune, which focused on Teaching Pedagogies and Current Approaches to be adopted by all teachers. Second session of the day was started with the lecture of Prof. Dr. S. Baskar, Head and Dean (R&D), Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, TN. He focused on the Bloom’s Taxonomy and its Effective Assessment Strategy in current teaching learning process. Thereafter, Dr. Payal Bansal, Director, UCPE & FD, DPU, highlighted on Strategies for Student Centric Teaching Learning process.   

DAY 2: 27th February 2021

The third session started with a highly informative talk delivered by Dr. Flora Shah from Institute of Teacher Education (IITE) University, Gandhinagar on an interesting topic: MOOC platform development and MOOC proposal writing which was helpful for the faculties who wish to develop their own online courses. The talk was followed by another insightful talk by Prof. Alok Bhattacharya, Head of Biology, Ashoka University, Noida on “Research based pedagogy and significance”.

Later during the day in the fourth session, there was a talk by Dr. Gaurang Baxi on “Online Teaching and Learning Management” which was informative with insights on advance tools used in online teaching. This was followed by another thought provoking and interesting talk by Prof. Achutshankar Nair on “National Education Policy 2020”.

Valedictory Function:

The valedictory function began with welcome of the chief guest, valedictory address by the chief guest Prof. Achutshankar Nair, followed by feedback on the FDP by a few participants. The programme ended with concluding remarks by the Director, Prof. J.K. Pal followed by a vote of thanks by Prof. Minal Wani, Coordinator, e-FDP.
