REPORT ON“KHELO INDIA YOUTH GAMES 2019”

The KheloIndia programme has been introduced to revive the sports culture in India atthe grass-root level by building a strong framework for all sports played inour country and establish India as a great Sporting Nation. Khelo India YouthGames is a part of the revamped National Programme for development of sports,Khelo India. After the resounding success of the Khelo India School Games in2018, it was once again organised in 2019 in a much bigger version. The City ofPune hosted the event at The Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex Stadium from8th January 2019- 20th January 2019. For the event received a tremendousresponse with a total of 9000 participants across various states of thecountry. Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Physiotherapy and Dr. D. Y. Patil MedicalCollege, Hospital & Research Centre, Pune formed a competent Medical teamand actively participated in treating the injured sports persons on field. Theteam included Medical staff, Physiotherapists, Ortho-pedicians, Sports medicineexperts, Nurses, Interns, Ward boys and Clerical staff. Dr. D. Y. PatilVidyapeeth team was designated for the sports like Gymnastics, Volleyball,Boxing and Wrestling. Apart from that our Dr. D. Y. Patil College ofPhysiotherapy collaborated with YCM hospital for sports like Hockey, Football& Athletics at Place like Mamurdi, National Defence Academy etc. Everyarena had a team of 10 medical officers including physiotherapists,orthodontists, first aid doctors, nurses, etc.

 

For heavycontact sports like boxing and wrestling, the medical rooms were situated closeby so that attention is immediate when needed.

ThePhysiotherapy team played a vital role in on-field sports injury management.There were around 4-5 physiotherapists on deck the all-time in each arena. Thegymnastics and volleyball athletes sustained injuries like sprains, strains,knee injuries, back pain, etc. which were conservatively managed well byPhysios with taping, Cryotherapy and Manual therapy. They used various sportstaping methods like Kinesiotaping, Rigid Mcconnell Taping, to control pain andinstability of joints.  At the same timewrestling and boxing being high contact sports witnessed intense injuries likeFacial bruises, Ophthalmic injuries, Sprains, contusions were among some ofthem. The Medical and Physiotherapy team collectively managed and treated suchincoming trauma with utmost diligence. Almost 150 players were treated by ourteam of therapists. The on field experience of dealing with emergencies andtreating injuries prophylactically was of a great value for the buddingphysiotherapists and medical doctors. The physiotherapy team managed the wholeevent under the sincere guidance of Dr. Tushar J. Palekar, Principal, Dr. D. Y.Patil College of Physiotherapy, the Nodal Officer Dr. P. Muruganandam, and thecoordinators Dr. Gaurang Baxi and Dr. Amita Aggarwal.  Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth team wasexhilarated for getting this opportunity of being the proud medical partners ofKhelo India 2019.
