Guest Lecture On - ‘Recent Advances in Joints, Shoulder and Spine Surgeries’

Musculoskeletal Science Department conducted a guest lecture series on ‘‘RECENT ADVANCES IN JOINTS, SHOULDER AND SPINE SURGERIES’ for Interns, Final year and PG students in Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Physiotherapy on 5th January ‘19, between 2.30 - 5 pm. Dr. Ajay Anand Malshikare (Asst. Prof. Musculoskeletal department) organized the lecture series, the team of surgeons which consisted of  Dr.Neeraj Adkar (Joint Replacement Surgeon), Dr. Pradyumna Pairaiturkar (Spine Surgeon) and Dr. Surjit Kadrekar (Shoulder Surgeon) from Sai Shree Hospital  Aundh, Pune. The objective of lecture was to make students aware about Recent Advances in Joint and Spine surgeries which will help physiotherapists to design rehab protocol according to the implants used or type of surgery done. Dr. Neeraj Adkar started the lecture by delivering presentation on knee surgeries in Anterior Cruciate Ligament, Posterior Cruciate Ligament, and Posterior-Lateral Corner repair. He highlighted recent advanced techniques in reconstruction of knee ligaments. He also said from his experience that Hamstring graft in ACL reconstruction is the strongest graft compared to other and that he mainly prefers it. Later with the help of some case studies and AVs he projected, how the knee replacement surgeries are done on patients. It also has postoperative benefits compared to preoperative functional problems which patient had. Dr. Adkar discussed different types of traditional and recent advanced implants mainly used in Total knee replacement and Total hip replacement and its benefits in postoperative rehabilitation. After his lecture, he answered the queries asked by the students and he concluded his talk.

Dr. Surjit Kadrekar was the next speaker. His lecture was about Shoulder surgeries. First, he told about the assessment on how to diagnose shoulder problems clinically which included some recent advance special tests also. Later he spoke about various investigations which has to be done for diagnosing the frozen shoulder and associated soft tissue injuries. After that, he gave information about Rotator cuff repairs, Reverse shoulder repairs and different types of anchors used in surgery. Further, he explained about importance of physiotherapy in Postoperative rehabilitation of shoulder surgeries. Dr. Surjit too took questions from students and cleared their doubts. 

Lastly, Dr. Pradyumna Pairaiturkar started his talk with showing slides on clinical symptoms which Patients undergo while having back pain and assessment to be done to clinically diagnose whether its Disc related problem or Nerve related.  He then gave information about Percutaneous Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy (PELD) which decreases rehabilitation time and is less invasive surgery. He emphasized that Fusion of vertebras is better than trying implant to fix vertebras. Later he explained rehab protocol after lumbar surgeries with case studies. Again there was an interaction session between students and the speaker.

Almost 122 students attended the lecture along with 12 faculty members.
