The Extracurricular, Sports and Extension committee and the Student Council of Dr. D. Y. Patil Biotechnology and Bioinformatics Institute (DYPBBI) organized Student Council Election 2023-24 on 11th September 2023 to formulate new student council for the Academic year 2023-24
The Student Council of DYPBBI provides an opportunity for students to be involved in better governance, teamwork and decision-making. The Student Council is made through a process of democratically conducted elections and the main objective of this council is to enhance the communication between faculty, students, management, and DPU family. The student council is indicative of a conducive environment towards educational as well as personal development.
The student council consists of various positions related to academics, research, sports, NSS, placement and other extension activities. The following table states the structure of Student Council.

For involvement and representation of Ph. D. students in student council, this special category is included. The Director has to nominate one students from Ph. D scholars.

The start of the procedure for the Council Elections was initiated by self-nomination of candidates for positions in the council in which details of their academic and extracurricular activities were noted. These google forms were circulated to all students of DYPBBI by the present student council with the help of CR from each class. Students were supposed to fill the form giving their preference for any two positions for which they found themselves to be eligible.
On receiving the entries, the forms were scrutinized by the team of faculty members including Dr. Viniti Vaidya, Dr. Jyoti Deshpande, Dr. Soumya Basu, Dr. Shuchi Nagar and Mr. Amol Salagare.. After completion of initial screening and background verification the selected candidates were called for an Interview round. The interview round was held on 8th September, 2023 from 12:00 PM to 05:00 PM in the board room of DYPBBI. The faculty members allotted for the interview were Dr. Jyoti Deshpande, Dr. Viniti Vaidya, Dr. Soumya Basu, Dr. Shuchi Nagar and Mr. Amol Salagare. The GS and JGS candidates’ interview was conducted by Prof. Minal Wani and Director Prof. Neelu Nawani. The interview was conducted by the teachers based on the candidates’ preferences and questions were asked accordingly.
Based on students’ cumulative performance in all the screening rounds, all teachers came to a consensus for the final candidate list which was announced on the 9th September 2023. Two days were given for the candidates for legitimate campaigning with the help of attractive flyers, meaningful slogans and speeches as per the candidate’s motivation.
The Election for the DYPBBI Student Council (2023-2024) was held on the 11th September 2023 at 10:30 AM in the presence of the honorable Director Dr. Neelu Nawani and senior professors and all members of Extracurricular, Sports and Extension committee. The candidates were supposed to present a two- to three-minute-long speech to the audience while their manifestos and visions regarding the Institute were getting displayed through a projector. This is usually done to give an equal and fair opportunity to all participants to interact with the audience and let everyone understand precisely why they find themselves deserving for the nominated position.
This time there was physical voting process with ballet paper. According to the course year, voting time slots were made and then students were physically sent one by one for physical voting maintaining the confidentiality of process. The attendance was recorded to avoid multiple voting by same student. The election was handled with diligence and integrity under the continuous surveillance of the former council and a team of faculty members from the committee.
Dr. Jyoti Deshpande and Mr. Amol Salagare declared the results for various positions in the given order, Placement Cell coordinators, NSS Coordinators, Magazine Secretaries, Sports Secretaries, Academic secretaries, Cultural secretaries and Joint-General secretaries. The most awaited result of General Secretaries were announced by the Director Dr. Neelu Nawani.
The entire Student Council Election process was smoothly conducted over a period of 5 days by Student Council of DYPBBI and it was proactively monitored by a team of faculty members including Dr. Jyoti Deshpande, Mr. Amol Salagare, Dr. Shuchi Nagar, Dr. Soumya Basu and Dr. Viniti Vaidya from Extracurricular, Sports and Extension committee.
