A First MARSCON (Microbiology, Antimicrobial Resistance and Stewardship Conference)

DAY 1

The 1st MARSCON (Microbiology, Antimicrobial Resistance and Stewardship Conference) was successfully conducted by the Department of Microbiology on 3rd and 4th June 2022 in the Auditorium of Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research center, Pimpri, Pune. 

It was conducted in a hybrid (Offline and online) mode. More than 800 delegates from all corners of the country participated in the conference. There was a huge sense of excitement and anticipation for this amongst both participants and organizers. At 0930 hrs, Dr Nikunja Kumar Das, Associate Professor in the department of Microbiology welcomed all the delegates, speakers, and MMC observers. Dr. Rajashri Patil, Associate Professor in the department of Microbiology then took over the proceedings. She welcomed the First speaker, Dr Nageswari Gandham, Professor and HOD, Department of Microbiology,  Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College Pimpri, Pune.  Dr. Gandham spoke on the “Holistic approach to Antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial stewardship”. She then took questions from audience also. The second session was taken by Dr Prashant Sakhavalkar, ICU in charge and Assistant Professor, CCM, Dr D Y Patil Medical College, hospital and research center, Pimpri, Pune. He spoke on “Role of source reduction in Infection with MDRO's”. The session created quite a buzz, and invited a lot of questions. Formal inauguration of the conference took place at 1100 hrs. Dr NJ Pawar, Vice chancellor, DPU, Dr (Brig) Amarjit Singh (Principal director and CEO, Dr DY Patil Medical College Pimpri Pune),  Dr P. Vatsalaswamy (Director Academics), Dr J S Bhawalkar ( Dean, Dr DY Patil Medical College, Pimpri Pune), Dr AL Kakrani (Professor of Clinical eminence and director Academic Collaborations, Dr DY Patil Medical College Pimpri, Pune) graced the stage for conduct of opening ceremony.   Lamp lighting was done by all dignitaries. Dr NJ Pawar addressed the gathering and talked about the role of scientific conferences and wished all the best. Post tea session was started by Dr Aruna Poojary (HOD, department of pathology and microbiology, Breach Candy Hospital Trust, Mumbai). She spoke on “Antibiotic stewardship starts with right diagnosis”. She took a lot of audience questions. The next scientific session was taken by Dr Sonal Saxena (Director and HOD, department of Microbiology, Dr. Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi, WHO fellow on Antimicrobial resistance, joint secretary IAMM) and Dr Nikunja Kumar Das, (Associate Professor).     Dr Saxena spoke on length on “Antibiogram and its use in AMSP”. She took questions at the end of the session. Attendance was taken for Day 1 Session 1.

Post-lunch session was taken by Dr. Bharat Purandare (Consultant, Infectious diseases, Bharati Hospital, Pune). He deliberated on the management of difficult to treat cases in ICUs. He invited a lot of questions and answered them very happily. The next session was also conducted by Dr. Bharat as, Dr. Rajeev Soman (Infections disease physician, Jupiter hospital, DMH Pune) couldn`t make to the Conference because of untimely illness. He spoke on “Importance of de-escalation”. The whole organizing committee appreciated him for his timely help.

Post tea workshop was conducted by Dr Chanda Vyawahare (Professor, Dept of Microbiology, Dr DY Patil Medical College Pimpri Pune) and Dr Darshan Rana on “Collection of blood for culture”. This concluded the scientific session on Day 1. Feedback forms were collected online and Attendance was taken for Day 1 Session 2.

DAY 2

The scientific session of second day of 1st MARSCON 2022 started at 0900 hrs. The session was hosted by Dr Shalini Bhaumik. The 1st speaker was Dr Shahzad Mirza, Associate Professor and Infection Control officer and Dr Nikunja Kumar Das of Dr D Y Patil Medical College, Pune. Dr Shahzad spoke elaborately on “Infection control and AMR”. At the end of the session, he answered queries from offline and online delegates. The second session was chaired by Dr AL Kakrani (Professor of Clinical eminence and director Academic Collaborations, Dr DY Patil Medical College Pimpri, Pune). Dr Mathew Robinson (Assistant Professor, Division of infectious Diseases, John Hopkins University of school of Medicine, Baltimore) joined online and presented a talk on “Antibiotic stewardship and clinical management”. He answered a lot of questions from the delegates. The third talk of the day was given by Dr Prachee Sathe (Consultant, Critical care medicine, Ruby hall clinic). She talked elaborately on “Sepsis markers and its role in treatment in ICU's”. Post tea session was conducted by Dr Chanda Vyawahare and Dr Darshan Rana and Mr Nitin Kapoor. They spoke on Automation in Microbiology. Pre-lunch session was taken up by Dr Sampada Patwardhan (Professor and head, Department of microbiology laboratory, and HIC incharge, DMH). She elaborated on the different “Carbapenems, carbapenemases and their therapeutic options”. The session generated a lot of interest from all delegates and she was very happy to take questions. Post lunch session was taken by Dr Sangeeta Sharma (Professor and HOD neuropsychopharmacology, institute of human behavior and allied sciences, Delhi) and Dr NK Das. She joined online. She spoke on the “Challenges in implementation in National antibiotic policy”. She was happy to take questions at the end of the session. The next session was taken by Dr Priscilla Rupali (Professor, Department of Infectious diseases, CMC, Vellore) and Dr N K Das. Dr Priscilla joined online from CMC Vellore. She talked very enthusiastically on “Antimicrobials in pandemic and its fallout”. She also took up a lot of questions. The final session was taken up by Dr Parikshit Prayag (Consultant transplant infectious diseases, DMH) and chaired by Dr AL Kakrani. Dr Prayag spoke about “How to choose the correct antibiotic”. He too took questions at the end. All speakers were felicitated at the end of their talks. The Dean of the Dr D Y Patil Medical College Pimpri Pune, Dr J S Bhawalkar sir, was the guest for the Valedictory session. Valedictory session was conducted by Dr Chanda Vyawahare, Professor, Department of Microbiology, Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Pimpri.

There was a poster competition conducted which had an overwhelming response. The scientific committee shortlisted 20 abstracts for poster presentation. All the posters were very exhaustive, thorough, comprehensive and scientific. We had appointed a total of 6 judges from different departments who had a difficult time in finalizing the results. Eventually we had top 3 posters and 1st prize for the poster presentation was awarded to Mr Dhruv Qureshi. Second prize went to Dr Raksha K and third prize winner was Dr Abhijeet Mane. The Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Shahzad Mirza, the organising secretary of MARSCON 2022. He thanked all Chief patrons, Patrons, Dean, Organising team, judges, speakers, delegates, teaching and non-teaching staff, IT team, audio visual team, catering team, auditorium staff, housekeeping staff and others. The conference concluded with National Anthem.

The conference was MMC accredited with CPD CODE-MMC/MAC/2022/F-015608 and it was allotted 4 MMC credit hours.
