An educational visit to National AIDS Research Institute (NARI)

  • Dr. D. Y. Patil Biotechnology and Bioinformatics Institute, Tathwade organized the one-day educational visit to National Aids Research Institute, Pune for final year B. Tech. Biotechnology/Medical Biotechnology and M. Sc. Biotechnology students on 24th September 2018 under the program of “India International Science Festival 2018”. The visit was coordinated by faculty in-charge, Dr. Soumya Basu and Mr. Amol Salagare.

    Dr. Vijay Nema, Scientist D, NARI and Co-coordinator of the event welcomed the students and gave a brief introduction to the program. The program started with a special lecture by Dr. S S Godbole, Scientist F, NARI on clinical research. She presented data on clinical trials and drug design process related to HIV. Her talk was very informative and technical, and students received comprehensive knowledge about different phases of clinical trials. She also explained various clinical trials conducted by NARI with case studies and detailed information about the process. She showed an interesting video depicting the prognosis of HIV.

    The lecture was followed by the visit to HIV museum set up by NARI which depicts HIV related information along with some models and different diagnostics tests used for AIDS patients. There was a small interactive panel session with various scientists from different departments of NARI. Dr. Seema Sahay, Dr. Madhuri Thakar, and Dr. Arti Mane were leading the panel. They responded to various questions asked by students and they also created social awareness about the AIDS patients. The panel discussion was very interesting and the panelist encouraged the students for undertaking research in the field of HIV.

    Finally, students were divided into groups and were taken for laboratory visits like Microbiology lab, Molecular biology lab, Immunology lab, and Serology lab. The students got acquainted with various facilities available at each laboratory and ongoing research

    Overall the visit was very informative and technical, and students came to know about HIV infection, diagnose and preventions through direct interaction with eminent scientists from NARI.
