  • Department of Radio-diagnosis, Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Center, Pimpri, Pune in association with ‘Breast Imaging Society of India’ had organized a dedicated conference on the ‘Breast Imaging - Basic to Advanced’ on 28th July 2018.

Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, have all the modern and state of art facilities with quality teaching, training and research activities. Dr. S. G. Gandage, Professor and Head and Organizing Chairman, Dr. Pratiksha Yadav, Professor and Organizing Secretary of the Conference have mentioned that the departments have been engaged in social awareness for the screening of breast carcinoma. Furthering this effect the Department of Radio-diagnosis have organized an educational bonanza of lectures, which have covered all the diseases of the breast. Advances and ongoing improvements in the imaging modalities have increased the sensitivity to detect the breast cancer earliest in the screening. Scientific Programme of the conference featured ‘Basic to Advanced’ which covered all the topics from the basics to the advanced, modern imaging techniques.

It was organized to improve the diagnostic imaging so more and more Radiologists can get training to do quality reporting of mammography, Ultrasound breast and Breast MRI. All the eminent speakers in the conference are the senior faculty member of the ‘Breast Imaging Society of India’ which is working to improve the diagnostic and interventional facilities in the breast diseases.

A well trained Radiologist can detect very small (only few millimeter) cancer nodule in the Screening mammography so it can be treated early and will have good prognosis. In Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College has all the modern and state of art equipments with qualified experts in the breast imaging. It has Digital Mammography machine with tomosnthesis, Ultrasound Breast, Breast MRI and interventional facility to do guided biopsies.

In India, we are now witnessing more and more numbers of patients being diagnosed with breast cancer to be in the younger age groups (in their thirties and forties).

Healthcare is low on priority and even in major cities, screening is also an 'alien' word for most people. So naturally, this results in most people presenting only when symptomatic, and on an average, most 'symptomatic' cancers are stage 2B and beyond (significant numbers in stages 3 and 4). So the breast cancer patients do not tend to survive for a longer time, as their western counterparts.

Goal of the breast cancer awareness is to save lives through early detection. Advancements in diagnostic methods, treatment and surgery improve the early detection and survival rates.
