On the 19th ofSeptember an industrial visit to Volkswagen plant at Chakan, Pune was arrangedfor the MBA students of Operation Management of Global Business School andResearch Centre. At the plant, students gathered in the audio visual room wherethey were greeted by Mr. Akshay from Corporate Relations. Post presentation, students were taken inside the production plant. They were shown how Volkswagendifferentiates itself compared to other brands. Volkswagen entered Indianmarket in 1960. The Chakan plant started in 2007. The plant was built in 17months-record across all the Volkswagen manufacturing facilities worldwide.Volkswagen plant in Chakan occupies a total area of over 2.3 million squaremeters (572 acres), with buildings covering about 1,15,000 square meters. Theplant has a production capacity of up to 200,000 vehicles a year in a fullthree shift system. But now the plant is working in two shifts producing 400cars in a day. Pune plant is one of the most modern in the Volkswagen Group. The facility is the only production plant operated by a German automaker inIndia that covers the entire production process, from press shop through bodyshop and paint shop to final assembly. The facility uses futuristicallydesigned state-of-the-art equipment. For example, the body shop uses the DiodeLaser Brazing (DLB) technology, whereas the Roof & Side Framer lasertechnology is used for welding the roof to the body of the car. The facility isalso one of the few environment-friendly manufacturing plants around the area. Some of the cars produced in house are the VW Polo, Vento, Ameo and SkodaRapid. The other VW cars sold are only imported & assembled here.

After the visit ofthe plant, question and answer round was organised. Students enthusiasticallyasked various questions and cleared their doubts regarding the productionprocesses and the company operations. This visit was experiential learning andhelped students to boost their understanding of manufacturing operations.
